Interesting Matala Facts
Matala was made famous in the 60s and 70s by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens. They travelled to Matala to enjoy the beautiful scenery and sunsets.
Joni Mitchell immortalised Matala in her song Carey:
The wind is in from Africa / Last night I couldn’t sleep
Oh, you know it sure is hard to leave here Carey / But it’s really not my home
My fingernails are filthy, I got beach tar on my feet
And I miss my clean white linen and my fancy French cologne
Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine
And we’ll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down
Let’s have another round for the bright red devil
Who keeps me in this tourist town
The night is a starry dome. / And they’re playin’ that scratchy rock and roll
Beneath the Matala Moon
From the beach you can access man made caves in the cliffs which date back to the Neolithic period. They were living spaces but then some became Roman tombs. They are a must see and give great insight into how people lived in those times.
Matala was the port to Phaistos and Gortys in the Minoan period and both places are well worth a trip to see the ancient palace and surrounding countryside.
Matala beach, Crete island. The caves in the cliff were created in the Neolithic Age.
Crete & The Labyrinth
Crete is the home of the seven fold Labyrinth. It was first built by Daedalus, King Minos of Knossus, to hold the Minotaur which was eventually killed by Theseus. Legend has it that Ariadne, daughter of King Minos gave Theseus a ball of string so that he could find his way out of the labyrinth. However this liaison did not last as she later became the bride of Dionysius.
The Labyrinth relates to wholeness. It represents a journey to our own centre and back again. The labyrinth allows us to have a direct experience of self.
Like the tarot, it can be classed as an archetype and is a key to awaken hidden wisdom.
The cost for the tarot retreat is £450.
This does not include flights, accommodation or transfers to the hotel.
I am offering an Early Bird discount if booked before 21 April 2107 of £400.
