A LETTER TO MY NEOPHYTE SELF
"Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins."
I think all of us at some time have said to themselves, "If I knew then what I know now!" However this is missing the point, the point being that old chestnut, "It’s not the destination, but the journey."
As we travel our journey we grow into ourselves.
We acquire the mantle of master, it is not given to us. Learning is very much a part of that journey. To have a destination implies that we have attached an outcome to an ending. We have a vision or a goal of what we hope to achieve; we have an intention of what we want to manifest but these are not destinations, they are milestones, monuments and testimonies to our insurmountable desire to survive and win.
Learning is the destination.
The learning never ends, a bit like the tail eating snake. Learning takes you ever onward to new levels of consciousness, a cerebral and spiritual spaceship that hurtles you through the vast and infinite possibilities of potential.
It seems like such a long time ago that I sat in a class as the Neophyte.
It was such a big deal. I didn’t really have a clue where it was all going to lead me but I was so happy to be in a group of like-minded people some of whom I am still in touch with, including my tutor.
My own courses begin this week.
As I was thinking about what to focus on for the forthcoming 10 weeks, I found myself wandering off through the mists of time to when I was that complete beginner, slavish and devoted I would turn up week after week; each meeting an adventure in personal and spiritual discovery. The first thing I learned was that for every four steps you take psychically, you take another three personally.
Herein lies the real challenge.
These days there seems to be less emphasis on humility and acquiring a spiritual armoury, like courage and confidence and hope, but more about receiving huge swathes of information. Stuff that can be used to best any other in the field, stuff to pacify inadequacy, stuff that creates attention and stuff that generally has little relevance to the immediate reality.
Is there such a thing as a spiritual fact?
By searching for empirical evidence we move away from our unique essence that is intrinsic and loyal to our soul. It is this essence that spirit will connect to and work with.
“Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. You can only form the minds of reasoning animals upon Facts; nothing else will ever be of any service to them.” Charles Dickens, Hard Times.
Facts can be regurgitated and manipulated for the best outcome it is our intuition that holds the key to the portal of the wisdom in the universe. Yes, it requires training and structure but central to this process is trust. Trust is everything. Get yourself out of the way and trust.
So, I asked myself: "If I was starting out as a total newbie, what would I say to myself?"
I composed a little note to that innocent, excited and sometimes bewildered individual who, quite by fluke and fortune, found herself in a workshop meeting her Spirit Guide for the very first time all those moons ago...the rest is history.
Dear Neophyte Self,
You are probably quite amazed by being in a development class and you are probably even more amazed by your peers who hail from every walk of life.
YOUR EYES ARE ABOUT TO OPEN.
You have to understand that you are now in a place that you dreamed of, a long time ago, and now the time is right for you to truly own your passion and talent.
NOTHING IS EVER BY ACCIDENT. NOTHING IS EVER RANDOM.
Your deepest desire has been realised and is in harmony with your destiny. Your chance has finally arrived for you to pursue your purpose, whatever that may mean to you, the truth of which may not be fully understood for a very long time to come.
Actually, your training began in childhood and has been ongoing throughout. All your life experiences are a treasure trove for the spirit. No experience is ever wasted. If love has eluded you this doesn’t mean that you are incapable of carrying the light, your light is your gift to the world and it is better to give your love to those that deserve it.
YOU WERE BORN TO BE OF SERVICE.
Beware the paralysis of the analysis. Over analysing can result in little or no movement. See your journey of development as an adventure. Take that leap of faith.
TRUST THE PROCESS.
There is no easy path to development. There are no shortcuts, no easy options. You are not in a rush. Don’t be hastened. Being in too much of a hurry could result in you missing out on all the good stuff. It takes several years to hone those fabulous skills.
A STEADY TREAD IS THE BEST WAY FORWARD.
Incremental steps, each one a success in its own right. The discipline required will emerge from your dedication. Your development is an investment in yourself.
NOW YOU WILL BEGIN TO SEE THE QUALITIES AND BEAUTY THAT LIE WITHIN.
These are your gifts. Try not to deny them.
Your spiritual teacher is a reflection of you in some shape or form. Their guidance will enable you to become a part of something that has no dogma but is steeped in tradition and history and is an institution unto itself.
LOOK, LISTEN AND FEEL.
These are the basic ingredients for your growth.
IT IS ALL ABOUT LOVE.
That is the driving force. You are not here to help, you are here to love. Love is the foundation. Love is the creative dynamic. Love is the hope of the fulfilled dream.
LIVE TO LOVE.
