“Ultimately, work on self is inseparable from work in the world. Each mirrors the other; each is a vehicle for the other. When we change ourselves, our values and actions change as well. When we do work in the world, internal issues arise that we must face or be rendered ineffective.”
― Charles Eisenstein, Sacred Economics: Money, Gift, and Society in the Age of Transition.
I have a particular fondness for the Suit of Pentacles.
They give such wonderful insights as to the way of the world and how to make it through the daily challenges as best we can. I have learned from them that the most spiritual thing you can do is simply to be alive. I think the Pentacles are spiritual by nature, they tell us that the physical incarnation is vital to our overall development and I marvel at the fabulous advice we are given around money, stability and health.
The Queen of Pentacles is a favourite of mine.
You can feel her compassion and at the same time her ability to be grounded and straight talking. In the old days she would have been the philanthropist's wife, gathering together her special club to raise money for charitable causes. Nowadays we can see her as the boss of a business, she is fair, honest, direct but never loses her grasp on compassion.
The image of her in the RWS deck reminds me of the Mother Mary holding Jesus. When I first saw it I pondered - could it be that Mary is a metaphor for the Earth and the Christ child is all of us as a collective? We all have the antidote to suffering in the world, we all have the ability to heal.
The Ace of Pentacles is another favourite.
When it pops up in a reading it is like an answered prayer offering new beginnings, a second chance. We are encouraged to dance in the garden of Eden, to take the material world by the horns and create what we can from our skills and talents.
The 2 of Pentacles.
This requires us to put down those balls we are juggling in the air and to seek out balance. Maybe we have too much going on so we need to ground ourselves. It is not for us to be stressed by making our way, instead it is better that we do something fun instead, the stress will pass, everything passes!
The 3 of Pentacles.
This the foundation that we build. This foundation will ultimately alleviate stressful situations, we will receive acknowledgement and good regards for our work and progress will be made. Projects are favoured by those who are significant in our work.
The 4 of Pentacles.
This asks us to protect our assets, to look after those foundations. But at the same time be prepared to let go of outdated stuff in order for new things to come in.
Fives are tough cookies, they speak of the frailty of the human condition.
5 of Pentacles reminds us to look after our health, to stop emotionally relating to everything and to be more practical. Our isolation will bring little rewards. Being of service to others will help us in our personal evolution.
6 and 7 of Pentacles.
The 6 of Pentacles is about giving to others, being fair to those that have supported us and generosity and kindness ensure the world goes around. However, by being overly generous we can put ourselves in detriment and that does not concur with the message of the Pentacles which is of peace and love.
The 7 gathers a harvest of all our hard work, what have we got to show for it, is it still relevant? More hard work to come but the rewards are huge.
8 and 9 of Pentacles.
8 of Pentacles, repetition makes us a master. We have got those talents down to a tee yet we must avoid our work becoming a means to an end, self-value is key here.
We all love this 9. Independence, achievement coming from effort means that financially we are on top of our game. As long as we can exercise prudence we can expect to be in a good all round place.
Finally, the 10 of Pentacles.
I love the message from the 10. Invest in yourself, do the course, buy the house, leave your footprint for others to follow, be a leader in your life.
Here are some pointers to align you with the Suit of Pentacles:
Are you a saver or a squanderer? Take some time each week to look at your budget, put a little money on one side for a rainy day.
Your body is a temple. Exercise and a healthy diet are key to getting the most out of life. Spiritual activities support the mind, body connection.
Alone or loneliness, there is a difference between the two. Being alone is a choice but loneliness can be debilitating. Pursuing an interest or hobby could put you in touch with like-minded people and a friendly face to see on a regular basis.
Making time to be of service to others is a sure fire way of growing the self by giving of the self. Your community needs you!
Taking a practical view of life’s situations can be more rewarding than trying to emotionally relate to the flotsam and jetsam that bubbles to the surface.
Be thankful for what you have, gratitude brings good stuff and keeps you in the flow!
