Is it that time of year already?

Well, it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
You know I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heartstrings that play soft and low
You know the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
You know the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Van Morrison - Moondance Lyrics

So, here we are!

The year marches relentlessly onwards and we are caught up in its advancement. The mornings are a little bit darker and the dogs are surprised that the garden has lost its golden morning tones and it requires a bit more negotiating to get out there. In the meantime I find myself debating what to wear. Do I need a cardigan? Do I pack my raincoat? On top of that my body seems to have gone into 'let’s stock up on winter fuel' mode and I am fighting carbs with all I have! This is reinforced by the spiders that have taken up residence everywhere! They slowly started moving in and making webs a couple of weeks ago and like clockwork are preparing for the autumn season. From the amount of our eight-legged friends that we have around us I would say that we are in for a wet autumnal time.

The autumn brings out the romantic in me.

As I write this I can imagine the smell of wood fires. I am thinking of new nourishing recipes and the aroma of the damp leaves fill my heart with gladness. The name for smelling damp or rain on earth is called petrichor and we humans love it! Apparently it is so good for us and it takes us back to the primordial days when the ability to predict rain meant survival. There really is something glorious about damp earth, fading light and leaves that fall; it prepares us for the even longer, darker days of winter. Nature is really very kind.

Autumn equinox was on the 22nd September at 10.21am!

This time and date is the moment when we say goodbye to summer, and what a summer it has been. I find myself not wanting to let it go and want to eke every last bit from the sunny days as I can. My sandals are not on the shelf yet and the jeans are still in the cupboard; it will be time enough when I have to exchange the cool baggy pants for tough old denim.

As you know equinox means equal night.

At the time of the equinox the days are divided into a 12 hour day and a 12 hour night. This happens for just two days a year.

The equinox occurs because the earth is tilted. Once a year the top and bottom of the planet tilt towards and away from the sun. At this time the sun is visible right above the equator giving perfectly divided amounts of sun.

In pagan circles this part of the year’s wheel is called Mabon.

It is named after a mythological being who was the son of the earth mother, Modron. This is a good time to have a ritual or altar to celebrate the turning of the wheel. The symbol for Mabon is the cornucopia. Perhaps you could create a space in your home and place a picture of the cornucopia on the altar and put on there anything that represents what you especially love about autumn. It can be a place and a time of expressing gratitude for the gifts of summer that you can take into the future.

Expand your recipe books with new concoctions made from autumnal foods. Keep an autumn journal filled with your thoughts, moods and scribblings which will help to prepare for the winter.

Apples are in abundance now.

They represent life and immortality, renewal and regeneration. If you slice an apple in half width ways you can see the pentagram which represents the elements and the four directions. There are so many good recipes for apple dishes; perhaps get cooking and share your best apple-based efforts with family and friends.

I wanted to pull a seasonal card for my Tarot tribe and we got the 7 of Wands.

This card tells us that we have the right to be ourselves and we should be this at all times. We have the higher ground now so if you have been wrangling with someone about who is right, especially in a work situation, then this card tells us to forge ahead; we can trust our knowledge and insights.

Maybe we are caught up in wanting to sort out problematic people and their stuff. Don’t waste your energy. Things can only be put right if others are paying attention, instead focus on your own path and do what is necessary to get ahead and away from anyone or anything that is likely to hold you back. Believe in yourself.

  • What am I releasing from summer?

  • What am I to be thankful for?

  • What does equality mean to me?

  • What am I contributing to the harvest?

  • What can I share with others?
