The Psychic Life of Water

“Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time?” That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains, everywhere and that the present only exists for it, not the shadow of the past nor the shadow of the future.”

― Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha

You probably don’t need me to tell you that we live on a planet which is mainly covered by water.

The Moon card is associated with water.

The imagery of the crustacean, the wolf and dog between the towers of Hermes are wonderful catalysts for contemplation about the beginning of consciousness. I think we do remember on a cellular level the memories of our emergence from the soup. We can do this by sitting quietly and allowing our imagination to take us on a meditative journey into that time and place. We can play with the images of our dawn: what were you? What were you doing? What are your memories of that time? Consider the word instinct, what does it mean to you?

Amazing to think that certain religious texts tell us Earth was made for man yet we don’t have gills! It’s even more amazing to think that at the dawn of time we crawled out of the water, an axolotl type creature who one day decided to wriggle and slither its way out of the swamp and into the primitive, prehistoric landscape which was also slowly evolving and developing and fervently creeping further into a brave new world. We have come a long way since then but we do have a special relationship with this particular element.

One of my favourite things to do is go down to the sea.

When I get the chance, I go to the seashore to gaze at the horizon, to play amongst the waves and marvel at the sheer vastness of the ocean. I always feel so well after a visit to the coast, to breathe in the salty air, to wash the aura in the watery power of life giving fluid.

Where would life be without water?

Probably nowhere. Epochs and cultures have known great suffering due to lack of water as without it there is death. The rain dance wasn’t created for picnic entertainment but to summon the deities together so that man shall live from the food he has sown with his own hands. No doubt Posiedon and Neptune, not to mention the countless water goddesses across the globe, have taken to their bosom the petitions of mankind who had stark reminders of their mortality, simply because it didn’t rain. On the other hand of course water is the master of destruction as we have seen in tsunamis, floods and the bursting of the dam.

Safe to say then, water is the elixir of life, be it physical or spiritual.

Water is a rich source of spiritual nourishment. We can see from the Ace of Cups the symbolism of water in our spiritual development. This card shows us our capacity to respond with love and to feel emotion in the world. The drops of water or yods that appear in the card reminds us of the divine’s energy in all things in the world. The life giving waters of the spirit bring renewal and profound potential within the spiritual realms.

I see in water a psychic connection.

The High Priestess with her gown trailing into water represents the psyche, within that we have intuition, inspiration, imagination and sensitivity.

The psychic faculty does not require analysis but courage to listen to the intuitive voice within. You see courage and water are connected. Water will change and adapt, it will find its own level, it will seek out the thirsty as the thirsty find the water, this takes audacity.

A card in the deck which is also connected to water but so misunderstood is the Hanged Man. The Kabbalah name for Hanged Man is Mem, which means water. Our spiritual warrior has descended the tree to find himself in the watery kingdom of the Earth. His descent offers him new perspectives on the journey of the spirit and he learns to let go of all that was real to him in order to participate in the cycles of life.

Cups are the suit of water.

They often speak of trusting our intuition, managing our emotions, which by the way suggests that empathy is not necessarily psychic! The path of Cups is the path of love. Love, like water, is as meaningful as rainfall. There are so many authors who have likened the growth of mankind to be as reliant on love as the flower is reliant on water.

What is the relationship between love and gratitude?

For an answer to this question, we can use water as a model.

“A water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, represented by H2O. If love and gratitude, like oxygen and hydrogen, were linked together in a ratio of 1 to 2, gratitude would be twice as large as love.”

― Masaru Emoto, Hidden Messages in Water.
