Back To Work!

‘’Witches are naturally nosy,” said Miss Tick, standing up. “Well, I must go. I hope we shall meet again. I will give you some free advice, though.” “Will it cost me anything?” “What? I just said it was free!” said Miss Tick. “Yes, but my father said that free advice often turns out to be expensive,” said Tiffany. Miss Tick sniffed. “You could say this advice is priceless,” she said, “Are you listening?” “Yes,” said Tiffany. “Good. Now…if you trust in yourself…” “Yes?” “…and believe in your dreams…” “Yes?” “…and follow your star…” Miss Tick went on. “Yes?” “…you’ll still be beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy. Goodbye.” ―

Terry Pratchett, The Wee Free Men

The buckets, spades and inflatable unicorns are stashed away until next year.

The beach towels are hanging to dry and the duty free wine and chocolate didn’t stay in the fridge for long. The holiday snaps on the smartphone are already immersed amongst jolly memes from well meaning pals welcoming you back into the pack, cajoling you to embrace your normal life seemingly washed anew after your super duper time away.

Is another holiday needed to get over your holiday?

Despite the fact that you could do with a holiday to get over your holiday, either because you have done more than usual and deserve a medal for gallantry or you are soooo burned out, totally KO’d after all that resting, you now have to turn your thoughts to getting back to work. Whether you love your job or not is not essential to getting the thoughts into gear, rolling out the routine and generally jumping right back into the career world.

Taking stock.

It is very helpful to sit down and take stock of what the rest of the year might have in store. Take time to consider your goals and options or at the very least put yourself into focus for getting back into work mode.

Here is a spread that will help you get into the swing of things.

Think of a card or randomly draw one that resembles you and your job, put it back in the deck.

Take the deck and give it a good old shuffle. Split the deck into three separate piles.

Go through each pile until you find your selected card. This is the pile you will use for the spread.

Take the pile and give it another shuffle. Take out seven cards. Remember you can always add more to each card if you wish to clarify further the message.

  • Where are you now? Work with this card to see what action can be taken in the immediate. Think about how this card might be reflecting your mood and focus.
  • What do you require? How does this card embody your thoughts and ideas? Consider how accessible putting them into practice might be.
  • What are my strengths? Reflect on your skills and how they can be used to their best advantage.
  • Creative opportunities. What can I do to explore any forthcoming opportunities?
  • Short term goals. Think about what can be achieved in the near future and whether it is relevant to you.
  • Is there something holding me back? Contemplate what may be in the way of achieving goals and what can be done to understand your hindrance.
  • Ideal Objective. What is it that you need to know about your career destination? Consider whether your current path is one of joy and fulfilment.
