Justice and other small matters.

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

Terry Pratchett Hogfather.

The Libra season is in full swing.

We are midway through and there are people showing up for readings with stuff going on around over-thinking, paralysis of the analysis, insomnia and other general malaise connected to the element of air. Actually this is great since air is the element that demands we balance out all that tips the scales and as a result we get back on track. It is all good especially if we think that as we get our own imbalances sorted out then the knock-on effect around us also gets a shake up. There is of course the politics to consider but let’s not talk of that right now!

Justice is the card that is associated with Libra. It is a card which, for me, has not always been an easy encounter.

Seeking balance is something that is a constant drive in my life. I don’t always achieve it but I have learned much in the attempt. I think that this is the reason Justice has been so elusive to my conscious connection and besides that, it is so dry. However, much humour can be found in the wrong administration of Justice, from the sardonic and satirical to the downright belly busting. The human grasp of understanding compassion through moral practice has always left a lot to be desired but this is another conversation piece to be explored after dinner.

There are many mythological connections to Justice.

Maat and Thoth come to mind but it is the relationship to the higher self, and it‘s nothing but the truth, that interests me.

How can we understand Justice in an unjust world? One wonders if our experience of justice is but a preservation of the old and warped hierarchy which seeks to serve its own. I have always hoped that our pronunciations of the law are a reflection of something more nihilistic and cosmic, after all there are no morals in the universe, only laws. Yet, we seem to be governed by abstract ideals and principles which are meant to create social harmony and at the same time echo the karmic principle of one reaps what one sows.

When I draw Justice for myself I set up a tick box.

Do I need to work on the harmony in my relationships, be they personal or professional, or do I need to take a more circumspect view of society in general?

Am I listening and coming to the right conclusions or is it more a case of everything fitting in with my particular philosophy?

Do I worry too much and then everything gets pushed out of all proportion?

Am I aware of my thoughts, deeds and consequences? Can I be more conscious of my own karmic footprint? On top of all of that are the essential essence of legal stuff, economics, ethics and integrity. But at the centre of all this is that the whole point of harmony is peace. It is a question we could ask ourselves frequently.

I am always interested in other people’s take on this card as it makes for brilliant and inspiring conversation. I am always up for a cup of tea and a deep and meaningful conflab!

Meanwhile here is a spread, give it a go and see how Justice, as an influence, flows through your life.

  1. SWORD. How will my truth bring clarity to my heart?

  2. SCALES. What can I do to bring greater harmony to my life?

  3. PILLARS. What is my greatest strength?

  4. VEIL. What have I learned that will stand me in good stead?

  5. CROWN. How will I evolve my authentic self?

  6. THRONE. What am I bringing into manifestation?

  7. PEEPING FOOT. What is my next positive step forward?
