That was a year, that was!
“Everyone believes the world's greatest lie..." says the mysterious old man.
"What is the world's greatest lie?" the little boy asks.
The old man replies, "It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.”
― Paulo Coelho
If I was to give a round up of this year I could write a whole chapter, nay, a whole book!
It doesn’t need me to tell you about the extraordinary year we have just lived. One hopes that as we sail into 2021 we will emerge into the coming year full of optimism and sass and ready for the new set of challenges that, no doubt, the 12 months of The Hierophant will bring us. I think this year has certainly encouraged me to embrace challenges, not to fear them but to rise to the occasion and smash it out of the ballpark.
I am reminded of the saying ‘The north wind made the Vikings’ or better still the timeless quote from Silver Birch, ‘From the crucible of bitter experience, my soul becomes tempered like gold.’
As we step back from the roller coaster ride of 2020 we can see the blessings and the curses in equal measure, what we make of them will surely shape what we will do and who we will become.
Let’s have a potted look at some of the moments of the fading year.
First off has to be the pandemic itself. I remember back in January with the Friday tribe, we had an inkling that something wasn’t right, there was definitely a highly charged vibe in the ether which we discussed at length and felt the need for greater spiritual hygiene and protection. In fact we were inspired to devote more time to working on trusting our intuition and reading the symbols and stories that the world was giving to us but we had no idea the proportion or the nature of the problem that was about to come tsunami like into all of our lives.
Hopefully spring time will bring good news and we will finally begin to see an end to the Covid crisis.
I have drawn the KNIGHT OF SWORDS for this. An impetuous, driving energy that feels no fear and is forceful and smashes its way through all that stands in its way.
The Emperor would love this Knight to be in his army, The Emperor (2020) needs the battle in order to rebuild and redesign. He has new frontiers in his sights.
Then there is the vaccine.
Whether you are for or against, it is nevertheless part of the memoirs of 2020. Let’s hope that it is a step in the right direction, after all prevention is better than cure.
For this I drew the PAGE OF PENTACLES. Interesting. Denotes confidence and assuredness. This Page reflects scholarship and accomplishments. It signifies the philosopher's stone and the search for the elixir of life and the transformation of the prima materia, neutralising all poisons and impurities. However, it is vital that knowledge be used for the greater good and not for means of control! I suppose we are being told that we have to trust science and make a start somewhere.
The next on the roll call of events in 2020 would be…
Trump being voted out of office and Biden taking leadership of the States or the free world as it is frighteningly known.
Well, well, well, I drew THE EMPEROR!! I am drawn to the shadow side of this archetype. Oppressive and dictatorial, questionable and self-serving. He protects those that he values, based on personal criteria but his protection comes at a price. He expects obedience and will become emotionally charged and violent if disobeyed. He values his own will over anything objective and his autocratic behaviour signifies patriarchal roleplay. The position of President requires maturity with a desire for communal life. One can only hope that this description does not apply to Biden who may bring the light version of the Emperor to the White House.
I suppose we must mention lockdown, which was global, that is quite a thought.
No socialising, no travel and working from home. This for many was a good time to re-evaluate yet it was mind blowingly disruptive and difficult. I drew THE HERMIT. (I kid you not!) A time of quiet growth and experiences which test new abilities of a personal and private nature. Reformation and renewal resulting in change, new direction and a deeper awareness of the motives of others! It suggests that this could be about being prepared to let go, to resist holding on. By this one presumes a past way of living and being. Let the lamp light the way forward!
There so many things to talk about, we have been a witness to loss and sorrow and we face economic and social struggle ahead. Perhaps the Hermit is indeed preparing us for what is to come.
My own personal success.
This has been in mastering online classes which have gone from strength to strength and I look forward to a very busy term starting in January.
I have been a teacher for a very long time and it has always been in a classroom so the prospect of teaching online was terrifying! There is still much to learn but I am confident we will continue to have a thriving, happy community of Tarotnauts.
I also learned to make cakes!
I had a fun time channelling Delia Smith much to the delight of my family as they reap the rewards! My cakes went from frisbee to edible and am planning some kind of cake excitement for Christmas!
I have had time to revision my work and am putting together a new website as we speak. I have also been working with Gill at the College on the finishing touches for the Go Pro certificated course which begins in May 2021. So exciting! I will certainly share the big unveil when all is ready!
This just leaves me to say a big thank you for all your support in 2020 and your patience and your kindness. I look forward to sharing the journey with you in 2021.
