The Chariot in Shadow.

“This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you. Take the power to make your life happy.”

― Susan Polis Schutz

I love writing for the Dark Side series.

I am in a perpetual state of learning; the shadow can be a brilliant teacher and can bring us to enlightened conclusions about our consequences. This is the point of the shadow...to become illuminated.

The Chariot, the Cancerian wagon of willpower.

This enigmatic card can teach us how to shape and align our ego to the requisites of the will. But which is the master and which is the emissary? The aesthetic vision would be two birds sitting on a branch, instead of fighting for a spot on the branch they share it and both can use it to their advantage and in the end everything benefits including the tree!

I see the Charioteer as the Magician.

Now he has found his skills and is gaining confidence with his talents he must somehow make them work for him. He needs to be courageous in his manifestations, to be prepared for success that leads to a resounding victory but also to be able to leave the past behind, only the glory of the moment is relevant and that must be learned.

With the Chariot we see that we have outgrown interdependence and now we move towards independence and personal responsibility for our own actions.

The Chariot represents the problems we encounter when strengthening the ego.

We are pulled about by powerful forces which feel like being dragged along by a galloping horse and a trotting donkey at the same time. Somehow we have to stay centred and grounded. We can no longer have the joie de vivre of fatalism, it is time to develop a target orientated, self-motivating dynamic which will give the ego something to do and can be fuelled by the spirit.

The personality can then take form despite the paradoxes that surround the vibrant ‘I wanna’ of the ego with the unconscious ‘so it is.’

Our unconscious impulses are very powerful and we have to learn to cope with them. We must not let ourselves go too far and allow the ego to turn us into the despotic enfant terrible!

The Chariot can represent a burning desire for self-aggrandisement, glory, fame and to be recognised as the alpha personality.

Riding roughshod over others the drive for mastery and domination crushes others into submission and brings the illusion that we have dispensed with the old and the outgrown when in fact the charioteer has found a new way of hanging on to that which should be relegated to the outposts of ‘done that and been there.’

Darker still, there are those who cannot see that the will is shaped by ambition and are blind to their own destructive tendencies for the sake of gaining power or knowledge. The Chariot exhibits little mercy in its pursuit of self-centred satisfaction and unhealthy accomplishment.

Superficial relationships are the domain of the Chariot.

The chaotic driver is no longer encompassed by free will to love but by the attachment of tearing open the scars of the wounded and blinded. The charioteer must see that there is a need to break old cycles of conflicted relationships and confusing pathways. The Chariot must have its destination or else face the annihilation of entering the abyss.

Aggressive or dominating tendencies are better channelled into thoughts and deeds that are productive and serve the greater good.

It is better to be the powerful individual who is capable of great change and transformation. It is for the charioteer to avoid disaster which will lead to regression and suppression; ignore the consequences of his actions at his peril, everything that could be gained is tossed into a broiling sea of discontent and self-destruction.

Look to the heart but engage the brain.

Choose wisely where you will send the arrow of your willpower, break free from the clinical world of analysis and flex the muscles of possibility.

Honesty and decisiveness are our best allies when we are in the phase of the Chariot.
